A pre-apprenticeship program is a training model designed to assist individuals who may not currently have the minimum requirements to enter into a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). Quality pre-apprenticeship programs have a partnership with one or more Registered Apprenticeship Programs that assist in placing individuals who have completed a pre-apprenticeship program into a Registered Apprenticeship Program.
Pre-apprenticeship involves a form of structured workplace education and training in which an employer, employer group, industry association, labor union, community-based organization, or educational institution work together to provide instruction that will introduce participants to the competencies, skills, and materials used in one or more apprenticeable occupations.
Colorado State Apprenticeship Agency Rules, 7 CCR 1108-13)(1.3) defines quality pre-apprenticeship as “a training model that meets, at a minimum, the federal definition of quality pre-apprenticeship, and any additional criteria established by the SAA for state recognition. Quality pre-apprenticeships are designed to assist individuals who may not currently possess the minimum requirements for selection into a registered apprenticeship program to meet the minimum selection criteria established in a program sponsor’s apprenticeship standards.
