Description
Learn a life-safety trade and get paid while you do it. Schedule: Five nights a week, approximately 40 hours a week. Overnight shifts, typically around 10 PM-6 AM; start and end times vary (often later), with occasional day and weekend work. Every commercial kitchen in Las Vegas needs a working fire suppression system over its cooking line. Western Fire Prevention has been protecting Las Vegas businesses since 1955, including some of the largest casino-resort kitchens on the Strip. We service and test the systems that put out kitchen fires before they spread. No fire-suppression experience is required. We'll teach you step by step, with a mentor, and your pay goes up as you prove your skills. What you'll learn to do - Install, maintain and test kitchen fire suppression systems: detection systems, manual pull stations and piping networks - Run pipe threaders and drill through stainless steel hoods and panels - Lay out and verify UL-listed coverages for nozzles and appliances - Set up and test electrical shutdowns for cooking equipment - Work with exhaust fans and makeup air systems connected to the hood - Take part in building fire alarm testing tied to the suppression system - Service major hotel and casino-resort accounts as part of an experienced crew - Training toward the knowledge required for Nevada state licensing What the job is really like This job is demanding. Kitchens are serviced after they close. The crew meets at the property, loads carts and badges in with security, so you must bring a valid photo ID every night. You'll climb ladders and on and around cooking equipment, work in attics and other tight, hot spaces, reach overhead, and push carts through back-of-house areas. Kitchens are greasy and you will get dirty. Non-slip work shoes are required from day one. What you need - At least 18 years old - A valid driver's license (required) - Your own mobile phone for crew communication - Able to work overnight shifts (typically around 10 PM-6 AM, with start and end times that vary, often later) and occasional day and weekend work - Able to perform the physical duties described above, with or without reasonable accommodation - Able to read and follow written safety instructions and checklists, and communicate with the crew and customers - Authorized to work in the United States - Job offers depend on passing a pre-employment drug test, as permitted by Nevada law - A felony conviction may affect eligibility for a Nevada State Fire Marshal certificate. This is decided case by case. Helpful, not required: hand and power tool, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, maintenance or kitchen equipment experience; a construction, military or trade-school background; Spanish. Your career path and pay: six stages You move up by demonstrating skills and getting signed off by a trainer, not just by waiting. 1. Apprentice: Foundation $22/hr, Developing $24.50/hr, Advanced $27/hr 2. Developing Technician: $60,000 a year.
