Position Overview This is the entry point into the trade, and we treat it that way. You will be placed on one of two teams, Control Panel Assembly or Control Panel Wiring, based on your experience and where we need hands. Which team is decided during the interview, but is fluid depending on shop needs. Everything you build at this level is checked by a senior technician before it moves, and that is not a lack of trust, it is how the standard gets into your hands. Prior control panel fabrication experience is not required. A strong work ethic and a real desire to learn the trade are. Responsibilities — Control Panel Assembly Cut and mount DIN rail and wire duct from a released assembly drawing Mount control components to specification and to torque: breakers, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, contactors, disconnects, etc Drill, deburr, and tap subpanels from a provided layout. Most drilling, milling and cutting is done on a CNC Machine or Laser. Apply nameplates, legend plates, and component identification Install door hardware and standard panel accessories Keep the enclosure and bench clean and free of chips and debris Responsibilities — Control Panel Wiring Cut, strip, ferrule or crimp, and land conductors from a wire list or marked schematic. Wires to be sizes per shop standard and/or customer specs. Select the correct ferrule and crimp die, and torque every terminal to specification Apply wire markers and labels to the shop standard at both ends of every conductor Dress conductors into wire duct and lace or tie exposed runs so bundles are square and serviceable Present each wire-list or schematic section for verification before moving to the next Qualifications Strong mechanical aptitude Knowledge and ability to use basic hand and power tools Dependable and detail oriented A strong work ethic and a desire to learn the trade Ability to accept corrections on your work without taking it personally. At this level, having your work inspected is how you learn Ability to stand for extended periods and to lift 50 lb GED or high school diploma, English, and U.S. work authorization Preferred Reading electrical schematics is helpful but not required Prior control panel fabrication experience is not required, but it is welcomed and it is rewarded in where you start in the range Any hands-on fabrication, electrical, mechanical assembly, electronics, automotive, or trade school background Military electrical, avionics, or fabrication training Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk on a concrete shop floor for the full shift. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lb unassisted, and more with assistance or lifting equipment. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach overhead frequently. On Assembly, that means laying out a subpanel from the schematic and the bill of material with no dimensioned layout handed to you, and modifying an enclosure without compromising its Type rating. On Wiring, it means wiring from schematic with no wire list, selecting your own gauge and color where the drawing is silent, and ringing out your own work. Which team you land on is decided during the interview. At this level your signature releases the work, and that is the real difference between this job and the one below it. Responsibilities — Control Panel Assembly Lay out a subpanel from schematic and bill of material, applying UL 508A wire bending space, component clearance, and wire duct fill Modify enclosures: HMI and pilot device cutouts, gland plates, air conditioner and fan installs, with the Type rating intact after the modification Install grounding and bonding hardware: subpanel bond, door bond straps, ground bars and studs Select standard hardware without being told: fastener, standoff, ground stud, mounting method Reconcile the bill of material against received parts and flag shortages and substitutions before the build starts Sign your own assembly and verify Level I work Responsibilities — Control Panel Wiring Wire a complete standard panel from schematic with no wire list Select conductor gauge, color, and type from the UL 508A tables where the drawing does not call them out Wire power distribution: main lugs, bus, distribution blocks, CTs and PTs, drive power and load Terminate shielded instrumentation cable with correct shield grounding, and network cable with correct terminators and pinouts Ring out and continuity-check your own panel, run the point-to-point check sheet, and sign it Catch a drawing error and report it instead of building it Qualifications Fluent reading of electrical schematics, layout drawings, and bills of material Two or more years of control panel fabrication, industrial electrical, or equivalent hands-on experience Working knowledge of UL 508A construction requirements as they apply to your side of the build Confident, unsupervised use of shop hand and power tools The judgment to stop and raise a problem with a drawing rather than build it and let someone else find it Ability to stand for extended periods and to lift 50 lb GED or high school diploma, English, and U.S. work authorization Preferred Direct UL 508A panel shop experience Familiarity with NEMA and UL Type ratings and what modification practice preserves them Turret punch, hydraulic knockout, and nibbler experience on painted steel and stainless PLC I/O, VFD, and network cable termination experience Trade school, apprenticeship, or journeyman electrical training Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk on a concrete shop floor for the full shift. You take the job packet at kickoff and own your side of the build through delivery. On Assembly, that is the layout and enclosure plan on multi-section and Type 4X work, and redlining the drawing when it will not build. On Wiring, that is full checkout including dielectric withstand and functional power-up, troubleshooting to root cause, and running the factory acceptance test with the customer in the room. You will train the technicians behind you and sign their advancement evidence. You will not manage timecards. We keep craft leadership and people management separate on purpose, so that a great builder never has to become a mediocre manager to get paid. Responsibilities — Control Panel Assembly Take the job packet at kickoff and produce the assembly plan: enclosure check, layout, heat load, cutout plan, and build sequence Redline the drawing when the layout as-drawn will not build, and route it to engineering with the reason Run the difficult scope: freestanding and floor-mount lineups, back-to-back and multi-section enclosures, MCC-style construction, seismic anchoring Own assembly-side construction documentation Field the UL field inspector's assembly questions directly Train Level I and Level II technicians and sign their advancement evidence Responsibilities — Control Panel Wiring Own full panel checkout: continuity, insulation resistance, dielectric withstand per the UL 508A production procedure, power-up, and I/O verification Troubleshoot a panel that will not come up, isolate to root cause, and drive it to closure Run the difficult scope: high-SCCR assemblies, VFD sections with correct segregation and shielding, 480V and above, transfer schemes, intrinsically safe barriers, dense PLC I/O Redline as-builts and route them to engineering so the customer's drawing set matches the panel that shipped Run factory acceptance and witness testing with the customer or engineer present Train Level I and Level II technicians and sign their advancement evidence Qualifications Five or more years building UL 508A control panels, or equivalent Working command of UL 508A, sufficient to make a build decision and defend it to a field inspector Demonstrated ownership of a job from kickoff to delivery Willingness and ability to train the people behind you. A Level III who cannot teach does not hold the level here Clear written and verbal communication with engineering, estimating, customers, and inspectors Ability to stand for extended periods and to lift 50 lb GED or high school diploma, English, and U.S. work authorization Preferred UL 508A Manufacturer's Technical Representative (MTR) designation.
