An Independent Professional Wrestler is a trained performance athlete who combines physical skill, storytelling, and character portrayal to entertain live and broadcast audiences. Working across various wrestling promotions, venues, and events, the wrestler executes choreographed and improvised matches while maintaining high standards of safety, conditioning, and audience engagement. This role requires athleticism, adaptability, and the ability to perform consistently in diverse environments without the centralized support structure of a major promotion.
Responsibilities
In-Ring Performance
Execute professional wrestling techniques including strikes, grappling, aerial maneuvers, and submissions
Perform structured matches based on established psychology (e.g., shine, heat, comeback, finish)
Adapt match execution in real-time based on crowd response and opponent interaction
Maintain safety for self and opponents through proper technique and communication
Character Development & Storytelling
Develop and portray a consistent wrestling persona (face, heel, or hybrid)
Deliver engaging promos (live or recorded) to build storylines and audience investment
Collaborate with promoters and other talent on match narratives and long-term arcs
Physical Conditioning & Training
Maintain peak physical fitness including strength, endurance, flexibility, and recovery
Participate in ongoing skills training (technical wrestling, striking, movement, timing)
Follow injury prevention protocols and rehabilitation programs when necessary
Professional Engagement & Booking
Secure bookings with independent promotions through networking and self-promotion
Travel to various venues and events, often on a flexible or irregular schedule
Represent promotions professionally at events, signings, and public appearances
Production & Event Collaboration
Coordinate with referees, producers, and event staff to ensure smooth match execution
Participate in rehearsals, run-throughs, and event setup when required
Adapt to different production environments (small venues, large arenas, livestream events)
