Midwest Glass and Glazing (MGG) is a locally-owned small business with approximately 80 employees that specializes in the manufacturing and installation of commercial windows, doors, and other openings in the Division 8 scope. Our work can be seen on hundreds of buildings throughout the greater KC metro and the Midwest region.

The MGG Glazier 1 Apprenticeship program is a 2-year, state-certified certificate program. Apprentices will learn this critical construction trade from experienced master glaziers through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world field work. Participants will all be paired with an experienced mentor and can expect to develop skill in custom metal fabrication, commercial aluminum door and window installation, site safety, commercial construction communications, reading architectural plans and specs, heavy equipment operation, and architectural hardware installation and troubleshooting.  

At the successful completion of the program, all apprentices will have received:

Journeyman Certificate signed by the Governor of Kansas (fully transferrable)

Journeyman Card

Equipment Operator's Certification Card

OSHA 10 Certification

On-the-job training
  • Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements.
    • Read and interpret blueprints or specifications to determine size, shape, color, type, or thickness of glass, location of framing, installation procedures, or staging or scaffolding materials required.
  • Verify alignment of structures or equipment.
    • Determine plumb of walls or ceilings, using plumb lines and levels.
  • Install aluminum components.
    • Fabricate and install aluminum frames (storefront and curtain wall) for glass installation.
    • Install pre-assembled metal frameworks for windows or doors to be fitted with glass panels, using hand tools.
  • Fabricate parts or components.
    • Fabricate or install metal sashes or moldings for glass installation, using aluminum or steel framing.
  • Install doors or windows.
    • Fasten glass panes into frames and doors with clips and/or stops, adding weather seals around pane edges when necessary to seal joints.
    • Set doors into frames and bolt metal hinges, handles, locks, or other hardware to attach doors to frames and walls.
  • Operate cranes, hoists, or other moving or lifting equipment.
    • Load and arrange glass or mirrors onto delivery trucks, using suction cups or cranes to lift glass.
  • Load or unload materials used in construction or extraction.
    • Load and arrange glass or mirrors onto delivery trucks, using suction cups or cranes to lift glass.
  • Measure materials or objects for installation or assembly. 
    • Measure mirrors and dimensions of areas to be covered to determine work procedures. Mark outlines or patterns on glass to indicate cutting lines.
  • Apply material to fill gaps in surfaces.
    • Fasten glass panes into frames with clips or stops adding weather seals around pane edges to seal joints.
  • Assemble temporary equipment or structures.
    • Assemble, erect, or dismantle scaffolds, rigging, or hoisting equipment.
  • Communicate with clients about products, procedures, and policies.
    • Confer with customers to determine project requirements or to provide cost estimates.
