Description

The Building Maintenance Technician Apprentice supports the Facilities Maintenance team by learning and performing entry-level maintenance, repair, inspection, and preventive maintenance tasks for campus buildings, equipment, and facility systems. This apprenticeship provides structured, hands-on training in general building maintenance, including basic electrical support, plumbing support, HVAC support, carpentry, painting, structural repair, equipment checks, and safe use of tools and materials.

Under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Technician Lead, or assigned technician, the apprentice assists with work orders, routine inspections, minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and facility improvement projects. The apprentice is expected to develop technical skills, follow safety procedures, provide quality customer service, and demonstrate professionalism while supporting students, staff, and center operations.

This position also supports the organization's mission by modeling positive workplace behaviors, maintaining a safe and respectful environment, and contributing to a clean, functional, and well-maintained facility.

Responsibilities

Building Maintenance and Repair

Assist with general maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, equipment, and systems. Duties may include supporting repairs to walls, doors, windows, flooring, ceilings, locks, hardware, furniture, etc.

Electrical Support

Under supervision, assist with basic electrical maintenance tasks such as inspecting, repairing, or replacing light fixtures, bulbs, switches, outlets, covers, and fuses.

Plumbing Support

Assist with basic plumbing-related maintenance tasks, including checking for leaks, clearing minor drainage issues, assisting with fixture repairs, and supporting maintenance staff with work orders.                             

HVAC and Mechanical Support

Duties include helping replace filters, visually inspecting units, reporting unusual noises or performance issues, cleaning accessible areas around equipment, and assisting technicians during scheduled preventive maintenance and related inspections.

Work Orders and Documentation

Assist with service and repair requests through the work order system.

Tools, Equipment, and Materials

Proper use, care, storage, and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, cleaning supplies, maintenance materials, and personal protective equipment.

Safety and Cleanliness

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area. Follow all safety guidelines and use required personal protective equipment.

Customer Service and Professional Conduct

Provide courteous and professional customer service at all times,

Demonstrate dependability, teamwork, accountability, initiative, respect, and willingness to learn. Support, promote, and enforce company policies at all times.

Skills

·        Ability to learn basic building maintenance techniques and apply instruction safely.

·        Ability to safely use common hand tools and power tools after proper training.

·        Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and report them immediately.

·        Ability to perform basic measurements, repairs, inspections, and cleaning related to maintenance work.

·        Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, students, and staff.

·        Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries.

·        Ability to manage time, complete assigned tasks, and stay organized.

·        Ability to work independently on basic assignments after training and under supervision.

·        Ability to support a respectful, safe, and positive work environment.

Qualifications

There is an educational requirement of: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency

There is a physical requirement of: Must be able to lift 25 pounds or more.

Other Qualifications: Must have reliable transportation

A valid driver's license is required.
