Serve a three-year apprentice learning to install, maintain, and repair water and sewer lines, and perform other tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the various types of equipment, and the movement of materials and supplies used by the department. APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: MENTAL: Ability to read, write and speak the English language. Ability to learn and comprehend all aspects of the water systems operations. PHYSICAL: See; hear; use both hands and both feet while safely climbing ladders or onto equipment. Ability to use both pick and shovel without constraints. Ability to use basic tools effectively. Ability to safely operate various kinds of powered equipment including dump truck, backhoe, wacker-packer, jackhammer, etc. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds. OTHER: Possess a valid Arkansas Driver's License and successfully obtain an Arkansas Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment. Must possess a Grade IV Water Distribution License at the end of three-year apprenticeship. Must live within a 30-minute response time of the intersection of Harkrider and Oak Streets in Conway. WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to work occasional overtime. Must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions. Upon completion of three-year apprenticeship, must be able to work after-hours “trouble” calls. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.
