Position Overview
We are seeking a versatile and patient-focused Optician/Ophthalmic Technician to join our eye care team in Kotzebue, Alaska. This unique role combines direct patient care, opticianry services, and support for the development and management of a growing in-house optical laboratory. The successful candidate will play an integral role in delivering high-quality vision care while helping to expand optical services across the region.
**This is a contract OR contract to hire position. Travel will be covered.**
Clinic Schedule & Environment
Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch break.
Typical patient volume ranges from 8-14 patients per day .
Cerner serves as the clinic's electronic medical record (EMR) platform.
Opportunity to work closely with providers in a team-oriented rural healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical & Patient Care
Perform diagnostic testing, including visual field testing and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).
Conduct preliminary patient examinations, including visual acuity testing, intraocular pressure measurements, and automated refraction/keratometry.
Administer medications as directed by the provider.
Neutralize and verify patient eyewear using a lensometer and accurately document findings.
Ensure examination rooms and diagnostic equipment are clean, organized, and ready for patient care.
Maintain patient flow and scheduling to promote timely access to eye care services.
Opticianry Services
Assist patients with frame and lens selection based on prescription, lifestyle, and visual needs.
Take accurate facial and frame measurements for eyewear fitting.
Order, verify, dispense, adjust, and repair eyeglasses.
Educate patients on proper eyewear use, care, and maintenance.
Support the development and operation of an in-house optical laboratory.
Assist with the supervision and mentorship of apprentice opticians.
Optical Shop Management
Maintain optical displays, frame boards, and dispensary presentation areas.
Monitor inventory levels of frames, lenses, accessories, and supplies.
Coordinate reordering and inventory management activities to ensure adequate stock levels.
Support the daily operations of the regional optical shop.
Administrative Duties
Answer phones, schedule appointments, place orders, distribute mail, and prepare correspondence.
Coordinate travel logistics as needed for clinic operations.
Complete and submit required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Travel & Outreach Responsibilities
Travel frequently to remote village communities to provide eye care services throughout the region.
Travel may involve transportation via light aircraft and can total up to 10 weeks annually .
Must be able to safely lift and transport up to 50 pounds of equipment and luggage.
Qualifications
Experience as an Optician, Ophthalmic Technician, Paraoptometric Technician, or related eye care professional preferred.
Strong customer service and patient communication skills.
Experience with ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and optical dispensing.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rural healthcare environment.
Willingness to travel extensively and support outreach eye care services.

Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
