Machine Shop Apprentice / Finishing Technician BlackTree Technical Group Waltham, MA Job Details Full-time $28 - $33 an hour 12 hours ago Qualifications High school diploma or GED Manufacturing facility experience Attention to detail Organizational skills Hand tools Full Job Description A fast-paced robotics manufacturing environment is seeking a hands-on Precision Manufacturing & Shop Technician to support both precision part finishing and the daily readiness, organization, and efficiency of a fabrication shop. This role combines hands-on deburring, finishing, inspection, basic CNC support, tooling and material management, and shop maintenance. The ideal candidate has a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient manufacturing environment. Key Responsibilities Perform precision deburring, finishing, cleaning, and inspection of machined components using manual and automated finishing equipment. Remove burrs, sharp edges, surface imperfections, and foreign material using files, scrapers, chamfering tools, rotary deburring tools, abrasive wheels, and other precision hand tools. Operate part finishing equipment, vibratory tumbling machines, ultrasonic cleaning tanks, and other post-processing equipment. Ensure final component quality, cleanliness, surface finish, and overall condition meet required specifications. Use microscopes and visual inspection equipment to identify imperfections and quality concerns. Read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings to confirm parts meet specifications. Operate simple heat-treat ovens as directed to support post-processing operations. Operate CNC machinery as needed under the direction of senior team members. Open and prepare the shop for daily operations, ensuring machines, tooling, and materials are organized and ready for use. Manage tool crib inventory and organization while ensuring critical consumables are stocked. Coordinate material movement, staging, and storage for fabrication and machining projects. Monitor and manage chips, coolant, oil levels, filters, and general machine condition. Perform basic preventative maintenance and first-level mechanical troubleshooting on shop equipment. Identify maintenance or repair needs, escalate issues appropriately, and track required follow-up. Maintain post-processing areas, machines, tooling, and workspaces in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Uphold strict shop safety procedures and maintain compliance with required PPE standards. Champion Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives. Identify opportunities to improve tooling organization, shop workflow, setup efficiency, and overall operational readiness. Partner closely with machinists, engineers, and production leadership to maintain a high-performing shop environment. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. 1-3 years of experience in a machining, fabrication, manufacturing, or machine shop environment. Experience with CNC equipment, shop machinery, or precision manufacturing processes. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings. Experience using precision hand tools, measuring equipment, and visual inspection tools. Basic experience with preventative maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting. Familiarity with metals, plastics, machining, fabrication, deburring, or finishing processes. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Experience or exposure to 5S, Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, or continuous improvement is preferred. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. Strong manual dexterity and coordination when working with precision tools and machinery. Working Conditions Work is performed in a manufacturing and fabrication shop environment. Regular exposure to noise, dust, oils, coolants, and manufacturing equipment. Required PPE includes eye protection, steel-toed boots, and other appropriate safety equipment. Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM-3:00 PM , with occasional overtime as needed. Pay: $28.00 - $33.00 per hour Work Location: In person
